US economy shrinks 0.1 pct., 1st time in 3? years

(AP) ? The U.S. economy unexpectedly shrank from October through December for the first time since 2009, hurt by the biggest cut in defense spending in 40 years, fewer exports and sluggish growth in company stockpiles. The drop occurred despite stronger consumer spending and business investment.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that the economy contracted at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter. That was a sharp slowdown from the 3.1 percent growth rate in the July-September quarter.

Economists said the drop in gross domestic product wasn't as bleak as it looked. The weakness was mainly the result of one-time factors. Government spending cuts and slower inventory growth, which can be volatile, subtracted a total of 2.6 percentage points from GDP.

But the fact that the economy shrank at all, combined with much lower consumer confidence reported Tuesday, may raise fears about the economy's durability in 2013. That's because deep automatic government spending cuts will cut into domestic and defense programs starting in March unless Congress reaches a deal to avert them.

And Americans are coming to grips with an increase in Social Security taxes that has begun to leave them with less take-home pay.

Still, the government spending cuts and slack inventory growth in the fourth quarter offset a 2.2 percent increase in consumer spending. And business spending on equipment and software rose after shrinking over the summer.

Consumer spending added 1.5 percentage points to GDP, and business investment added 1.1 points ? both stronger contributions than in the third quarter.

"Frankly, this is the best-looking contraction in U.S. GDP you'll ever see," Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics, said in a note to clients. "The drag from defense spending and inventories is a one-off. The rest of the report is all encouraging."

And for all of 2012, the economy expanded 2.2 percent, better than 2011's growth of 1.8 percent.

Exports fell by the most in nearly four years, a result of Europe's recession and slower growth in China and some other large developing countries.

Incomes, though, jumped last quarter as companies paid out special dividends and bonuses ahead of expected tax increases in 2013. Commerce estimated that businesses paid nearly $40 billion in early dividends. After-tax income, adjusted for inflation, rose 6.8 percent, the most in nearly four years.

Superstorm Sandy likely also dragged on growth by closing factories, disrupting shipping and shutting down retail stores. While the department did not specify its effects on GDP, it estimated that Sandy destroyed about $36 billion in buildings and other private property and $8.6 billion in government property.

Subpar growth has held back hiring. The economy has created about 150,000 jobs a month, on average, for the past two years. That's barely enough to reduce the unemployment rate, which has been 7.8 percent for the past two months.

Economists forecast that unemployment stayed at the still-high rate again this month. The government releases the January jobs report Friday.

The slower growth in stockpiles comes after a big jump in the third quarter. Companies frequently cut back on inventories if they anticipate a slowdown in sales. Slower inventory growth means factories likely produced less.

Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar, Inc. said this week that it reduced its inventories by $2 billion in the fourth quarter as global sales declined from a year earlier.

The biggest question going forward is how consumers react to the expiration of a Social Security tax cut. Congress and the White House allowed the temporary tax cut to expire in January, but reached a deal to keep income taxes from rising on most Americans.

The tax increase will lower take home pay this year by about 2 percent. That means a household earning $50,000 a year will have about $1,000 less to spend. A household with two high-paid workers will have up to $4,500 less.

Already, a key measure of consumer confidence plummeted this month after Americans noticed the reduction in their paychecks, the Conference Board reported Tuesday.

The app was developed by Publications International Ltd., which also created the iCookbook app. The recipes were created and tested by Crock-Pot kitchen experts.

The Crock-Pot brand is 40 years old and continues to enjoy popularity with families for its convenience. More than 64 million households own a Crock-Pot, according to the company.

The new Crock-Pot app has several features, including My Recipe Box, which enables users to manually add their own slow-cooker recipes so they can keep track of all of their favorites in one place; a Tips and Techniques section with how-to videos on how to maximize their use of their Crock-Pot, and the ability to share recipes with family and friends via Facebook or email.

Additionally, the app features iCookbooks hands-free Voice Command technology, enabling users to advance preparation instructions without having to touch their devices screen.

On-pack promotions
The Prepare function shows the recipe prep steps in a large flashcard-style display, allowing users to prepare the recipe without placing their device in the cooking area.

All of the recipes can be searched for in a number of different ways and every recipe includes an accompanying photo.

Free downloads of new recipes are available each month through the in-app store so that users can create a recipe collection to fit any occasion.

Crock-Pot Recipes is the third app to be built on the iCookbook platform. Other apps include Johnsonville Kitchens, Butterball Cookbook Plus and iCookbook: Diabetic.

The Crock-Pot brand and Publications International have a number of promotions planned to increase consumer awareness of the app. In addition to traditional advertising, promotions will include social media and in-pack, on-pack and near-pack messages.

The Crock-Pot Recipes app can be found in the Food Drink section of the Apple App Store for $3.99.

Nobody knows slow cooking better than the Crock-Pot brand, the leader in slow cooking for 40 years, Mr. Croft said. Weve learned that the slow cooker consumer really wants a great variety of slow cooker recipes, and weve delivered with 250 rigorously tested and proven slow cooker recipes from the brand they trust, Crock-Pot.

Instant View - Jobless claimant count shows another surprise fall, BoE minutes reveal growing doubts

LONDON (Reuters) - LONDON, Jan 23 (Reuters) - The number of Britons claiming unemployment benefit posted a surprise fall in December to the lowest since mid-2011, in a rare show of strength from an economy flirting with another recession.

Bank of England policymakers have growing doubts about the value of restarting the central bank's programme of asset purchases, minutes of the central bank's January 9-10 policy meeting showed on Wednesday.

KEY POINTS

- Lowest claimant count level since June 2011

- Lowest ILO unemployment level since Mar-May 2011

- Lowest ILO unemployment rate since Feb-Apr 2011, when it was also 7.7 percent

- Highest number of people in work since records began in 1971

ECONOMISTS' VIEWS

GEORGE BUCKLEY, DEUTSCHE BANK

"The jobs data is going to perpetuate this question of the productivity puzzle because the numbers are exceptionally strong.

"Unemployment down, employment up, claimant count down, revised down the previous month as well. You've still got that issue about, while we've got weak economic growth, because we've going to see GDP in Q4 probably -0.1 percent, 0.2 percent. Also there's a six month lag normally between changes in the labour market and changes in GDP, so you get a change in GDP, then a change in labour market takes about six months.

"You rewind six months from these months and you had very weak GDP in the first half of the year so I think that's a big issue.

ON BOE MINUTES

"On the minutes, I think one of the most interesting statements is the sterling real exchange rate is too high. I think that's a pretty interesting comment, at least, possibly trying to influence the exchange rate."

ROB CARNELL, ING

"Whilst the fourth quarter for UK activity still looks likely to come in on the negative side of the ledger, the UK labour market continues to surprise with its resilience.

"And in spite of some high profile retail failures in recent months, and large-scale job losses in the automotive sector, the UK added a surprisingly large 90K jobs in the three months to November, with the ILO unemployment count falling by 37,000 over the same period, taking the unemployment rate down to 7.7 percent.

"Despite, or perhaps helping to deliver the better employment data, wages growth was even more subdued, with average weekly earnings rising at only a 1.5 percent rate down from the previous rate of 1.8 percent."

ON BOE MINUTES:

"Simultaneous release of the Bank of England minutes for the January MPC meeting showed the same 8-1 vote for no change as in December, with David Miles still voting for a 25 billion increase in the asset purchase scheme.

"Today's labour market report probably helps the case for another "no change" decision at February's MPC meeting, though that will hang in the balance pending Friday's GDP result, which will suggest triple dip for the UK, with more members likely to join Miles in seeking an expansion in the BoE's current stance if it disappoints."

ROB WOOD, BERENBERG BANK

"A positive surprise with employment, rising 90,000 and the productivity puzzle continues in the UK. Output looks to be flat lining while employment is still rising, continuing the pattern of the past year.

We suspect that this puzzle must come to a head soon. It seems unlikely to us that employment can continue rising while the economy is flat lining."

ON BOE MINUTES

"David Miles voting for more asset purchases, the other eight members voting for no change. There seemed to be a bit of hardening of individual positions in the minutes, it said some members were stronger in their beliefs that more asset purchases weren't needed. So it's more of the same, the debate remains - inflation is above target, productivity growth is weak - while that is the case, the economy can only grow so fast without setting off inflation."

ROSS WALKER, RBS

"The employment numbers were a little bit better than forecast but there's still a modest slowdown relative to over the summer months and the wage inflation numbers are still distinctly soft so I don't see why any of this would really change the policy bias."

ON BOE MINUTES

"The minutes were pretty much as expected, really. (David)Miles again the sole-dissenter. Maybe interesting that his vote seemed more clearly tied to preventing a currency appreciation.

"We've seen a 2 percent slide in Sterling's trade weighted rate over the last few weeks so at the margin maybe a slightly less doveish tone to the minutes, but I don't think it changes much."

ANNALISA PIAZZA, NEWEDGE STRATEGY:

"The UK labour market showed signs of surprising resilience at the end of last year despite the weak business cycle. In details, jobless claims fell by 12.1k in Dec from a downward revised -8.9k in Nov (previously reported at -3k).

"The outcome is much more dynamic than our expectations for a flat reading and market consensus for a slight 0.5k increase. The unemployment rate remained stable at 4.8% in Dec, in line with expectations.

"All in all, today's report shows a surprising improvement in the labour market which is at odds with the development of the real economy that - in Q4 - is expected to have contracted by 0.5 percent quarter on quarter.

"Despite the relative strength of the labour market, earnings growth continued to moderate in Nov, with the average earnings index down to 1.5 percent from 1.8 percent in October. This is a clear sign of moderate negotiation power from employees that feel the pressure of earnings growing far less than inflation."

PHILIP SHAW, INVESTEC

"The employment numbers continue to flatter to deceive. The trends in both unemployment and jobs creation are completely at odds with the weakness with much of the real economy data that are being published.

"Whilst questions will be asked about the so-called productivity puzzle, the bottom line is that a robustly performing labour market is good for confidence and good for the public finances.

ON BOE MINUTES:

"No major surprise from the MPC minutes given that there is a quarterly inflation due next month, we weren't expecting fireworks from this meeting. Our view is that the MPC will keep the overall stance of monetary policy on hold throughout this year."

Farming injustice: end all trade with Israeli agricultural companies

22 January 2013?| Palestinian agriculture organisations, Occupied Palestine

Palestinian agricultural organisations and the Palestinian BDS Nationalbds Committee call for the launching of worldwide campaigns on February 9 against Israeli agricultural export corporations in light of their deep complicity in Israel?s ongoing violations of international law and Palestinian human rights. Following the successful campaign against Israel?s former leading agricultural export corporation Agrexco, and in light of the growing international consensus on the duty to enforce an effective ban on trade with the illegal Israeli settlements, we invite social movements, nongovernmental organisations, trade unions and human rights campaigners to take creative and effective action on February 9th in support of Palestinian farmers defending their land and natural resources.

The sale and purchase of goods from Israeli agricultural companies, such as Mehadrin and Hadiklaim, finance and reward the on-going illegal Israeli exploitation and colonisation of Palestinian land and further undermine the chances for a just peace based on international law and respect for universal human rights. As was demonstrated in the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa and the wide international solidarity movement with it, citizens can make a difference by refraining from buying products of complicit companies and by working to convince their supermarkets to stop trading with them.

Agriculture is a vital part of the Palestinian economy and national heritage, yet Palestinian farmers are being displaced from their lands and prevented from accessing it. Israel systematically exploits Palestinian natural resources in violation of international law and implements a range of restrictions on Palestinian agriculture in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, while allowing Israeli agricultural corporations to profit from Israel?s illegal settlement enterprise.

As Palestinian agricultural organisations have noted, Israeli agricultural export companies are at the heart of Israel?s system of domination over the Palestinian people. They are an integral component of the on-going process of colonisation and environmental destruction of Palestinian land, the destruction of Palestinian agriculture, the theft of water, and the abuse of Palestinian workers? rights, including child labourers.

Supermarkets should follow the lead of the Co-Operative Group in the UK, which has pledged to end trade with any company exporting goods from illegal Israeli settlements. Governments must meet their legal and moral obligation to take action in support of Palestinian self-determination and ban all forms of trade and cooperation with Israeli agricultural export companies complicit in the illegal settlement enterprise. People of conscience around the world can make sure such measures are taken. We count on your support to end business as usual with Israel?s agricultural companies as a contribution to our struggle for freedom, justice and equality.

How to Keep Outdoor Pets Warm in Winter - PawNation

By Dr. Marty Becker

Winter and summer both present challenges to keeping pets safe and comfortable, but winter is actually easier to prepare for since it's more about preventing exposure and less about the summer problem of preventing accidents. With one major exception: In cold weather, you always need to be aware of the possibility that a chilly cat could be cuddled against the warm engine of a recently parked car or in the dryer on a pile of warm clothes. Always check your dryer before using it, and thump the hood of your car before starting it to send any sleeping cat on his way.

RELATED: Do Any Dogs Need Sweaters or Coats? Only 3 Types Do

With very few exceptions, my snow country neighbors would never intentionally cause a pet to suffer in the winter or any other time. But sometimes people just don't have enough information or are just "doing it the way it has always been done." Education is always a big part of a doctor's job, and I pride myself on doing the best I can to offer good advice in a nonjudgmental way that encourages questions and discussion.

Your pet will weather winter better if he's healthy, so check in with your vet to be sure. Otherwise, here are my winter weather tips for your pets.

RELATED: 10 Cute Pets Wearing Sweaters

Gimme Shelter and Warmth

In my lifetime, many dog and cats have gone from the barnyard to the backyard to the bedroom. I still remember as a boy the day when my dad first allowed our farm dog to sleep in the kitchen during a blizzard. Now I fight for space on my own bed with our pets.

I'm not going to get into a discussion of whether any pet should be outside only, but I will say that small dogs and older pets are ill-equipped to handle extreme cold, and there's a world of difference between a big, long-haired cat and a near-naked Sphynx or lightly coated Rex cat. Same is true of an Alaskan Malamute or Italian Greyhound.

RELATED: Why "Outdoor Dogs" Are Miserable

For animals who are spending time outside, whether just during the day or all the time, it's essential that they have shelter that protects them from wind, rain and snow, and that it is small and well insulated enough for the pet's own body heat to keep the temperature up. Even better: Use hay and blankets to keep shelters cozy or talk with a contractor and even your vet about safe options for heating your pet's space.

For inside pets, soft, warm places to snooze are a must, especially if you have tile, stone or wood floors instead of carpeting. Older pets, especially, will appreciate thick beds with egg-crate-type padding.

Protect the Feet and the Fur

Every winter it's with regret that we clip the fur off our little Quixote's adorable fuzzy feet, but those long hairs between his pads make it easy for ice balls to form. But even for dogs who don't have Quixote's problem, protecting the feet with boots isn't a bad idea. For small indoor dogs the boots keep feet warm, but for all dogs in snow country boots can protect them from the toxins found in some deicing formulas. Even if you put boots on your pooch, I'd still recommend cleaning his feet when he comes in, just to be safe. (Bonus: It helps keep down tracking!)

RELATED: Will a Dog House Keep My Pet Warm in Winter?

And what about clothes for dogs? Again, it depends on the dog. The same kinds of dogs I mentioned as not suitable for life outdoors - small, older or thin-coated - really could use a jacket or sweater when they head out for a walk or to potty.

Fresh Water and Food Adjustments

People aren't the only ones who put on weight from Thanksgiving to New Year's. Decreased activity and increased availability of goodies have predictable results. I always recommend offering dogs healthy, low-cal treats like carrot sticks (dogs seems to like them better than people do) or breaking bigger biscuits into smaller treats to keep overall consumption down. Outside pets, by contrast, need more food as they burn calories to stay warm.

RELATED: Top 10 Hottest Dog Names for 2013

And don't forget water! A frozen landscape means frozen water in outdoor dishes. Check with your favorite pet supply retailers for heated bowls so your pet always has a supply of fresh water to drink.

With the basics covered, you can get out and enjoy the season with your pet. Our dogs love playing fetch in the snow, and the chance to dive into a drift makes the game more fun!

Files show how LA church leaders shielded priests

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Retired Cardinal Roger Mahony and other top Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles officials maneuvered behind the scenes to shield molester priests, provide damage control for the church and keep parishioners in the dark, according to church personnel files.

The confidential records filed in a lawsuit against the archdiocese disclose how the church handled abuse allegations for decades and also reveal dissent from a top Mahony aide who criticized his superiors for covering up allegations of abuse rather than protecting children.

Notes inked by Mahony demonstrate he was disturbed about abuse and sent problem priests for treatment, but there also were lengthy delays or oversights in some cases. Mahony received psychological reports on some priests that mentioned the possibility of many other victims, for example, but there is no indication that he or other church leaders investigated further.

"This is all intolerable and unacceptable to me," Mahony wrote in 1991 on a file of the Rev. Lynn Caffoe, a priest suspected of locking boys in his room, videotaping their crotches and running up a $100 phone sex bill while with a boy. Caffoe was sent for therapy and removed from ministry, but Mahony didn't move to defrock him until 2004, a decade after the archdiocese lost track of him.

"He is a fugitive from justice," Mahony wrote to the Vatican's Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who is now Pope Benedict XVI. "A check of the Social Security index discloses no report of his demise, so presumably he is alive somewhere."

Caffoe died in 2009, six years after a newspaper reporter found him working at a homeless mission two blocks from a Salinas elementary school.

Mahony was out of town but issued a statement Monday apologizing for his mistakes and saying he had been "naive" about the lasting impacts of abuse. He has since met with 90 abuse victims privately and keeps an index card with each victim's name in his private chapel, where he prays for them daily, he said. The card also includes the name of the molesting priest "lest I forget that real priests created this appalling harm."

"It remains my daily and fervent prayer that God's grace will flood the heart and soul of each victim, and that their life journey continues forward with ever greater healing," Mahony wrote. "I am sorry."

The apology stands in contrast to letters Mahony was writing to accused priests more than two decades ago.

In 1987, he wrote to the Rev. Michael Wempe ? who would ultimately admit to abusing 13 boys ? while the priest was undergoing in-patient therapy at a New Mexico treatment center.

"Each of you there at Jemez Springs is very much in my prayers and I call you to mind each day during my celebration of the Eucharist," Mahony wrote to the priest, adding that he supported him in the experience.

The church's sex abuse policy was evolving and Mahony inherited some of the worst cases from his predecessor when he took over in 1985, J. Michael Hennigan, an archdiocese attorney, said in a separate series of emails. Priests were sent out of state for psychological treatment because they revealed more when their therapists were not required to report child abuse to law enforcement, as they were in California, he said.

At the time, clergy were not mandated sex abuse reporters and the church let the victims' families decide whether to contact police, he added.

In at least one case, a priest victimized the children of illegal immigrants and threatened to have them deported if they told, the files show.

The files are attached to a motion seeking punitive damages in a case involving a Mexican priest sent to Los Angeles in 1987 after he was brutally beaten in his parish south of Mexico City.

When parents complained the Rev. Nicholas Aguilar Rivera molested in LA, church officials told the priest but waited two days to call police ? allowing him to flee to Mexico, court papers allege. At least 26 children told police they were abused during his 10 months in Los Angeles. The now-defrocked priest is believed to be in Mexico and remains a fugitive.

The personnel files of 13 other clerics were attached to the motion to show a cover-up pattern, said attorney Anthony De Marco, who represents the 35-year-old plaintiff. In one instance, a memo to Mahony discusses sending a cleric to a therapist who also is an attorney so any incriminating evidence is protected from authorities by lawyer-client privilege. In another instance, archdiocese officials paid a secret salary to a priest exiled to the Philippines after he and six other clerics were accused of having sex with a teen and impregnating her.

The exhibits offer a glimpse at some 30,000 pages to be made public as part of a record-setting $660 million settlement. The archdiocese agreed to give the files to more than 500 victims of priest abuse in 2007, but a lawyer for about 30 of the priests fought to keep records sealed. A judge recently ordered the church to release them without blacking out the names of church higher-ups after The Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times intervened.

They echo similar releases from other dioceses nationwide that have shown how church leaders for decades shuffled problem priests from parish to parish, covered up reports of abuse and didn't contact law enforcement. Top church officials in Missouri and Pennsylvania were criminally convicted last year for their roles in covering up abuse, more than a decade after the clergy sex abuse scandal began to unfold in Boston.

Mahony, who retired in 2011 after 26 years at the helm of the 4.3-million person archdiocese, has been particularly hounded by the case of the Rev. Michael Baker, who was sentenced to prison in 2007 for molestation ? two decades after the priest confessed his abuse to Mahony.

Mahony noted the "extremely grave and serious situation" when he sent Baker for psychological treatment after the priest told him in 1986 that he had molested two brothers over seven years.

Baker returned to ministry the next year with a doctor's recommendation that he be defrocked immediately if he spent any time with minors. Despite several documented instances of being alone with boys, the priest wasn't removed from ministry until 2000. Around the same time, the church learned he was conducting baptisms without permission.

Church officials discussed announcing Baker's abuse in churches where he had worked, but Mahony rejected the idea.

"We could open up another firestorm ? and it takes us years to recover from those," Mahony wrote in an Oct. 6, 2000, memo. "Is there no alternative to public announcements at all the Masses in 15 parishes??? Wow ? that really scares the daylights out of me!!"

The aide, Msgr. Richard Loomis, noted his dismay over the matter when he retired in 2001 as vicar for clergy, the top church official who handled priestly discipline. In a memo to his successor, Loomis said Baker's attorney disclosed the priest had at least 10 other victims.

"We've stepped back 20 years and are being driven by the need to cover-up and to keep the presbyteriate & public happily ignorant rather than the need to protect children," Loomis wrote.

"The only other option is to sit and wait until another victim comes forward. Then someone else will end up owning the archdiocese of Los Angeles. The liability issues involved aside, I think that course of complete (in)action would be immoral and unethical."

Mahony preferred targeted warnings at schools and youth groups rather than a warning read at Masses, Hennigan said. Parish announcements were made two years later.

Baker, who was paroled in 2011, is alleged to have molested 20 children in his 26-year career. He could not be reached for comment.

The files also show Mahony corresponded with abusive priests while they underwent treatment out of state and worked to keep them out of California to avoid criminal and civil trouble.

One case involved the Msgr. Peter Garcia, a molester whom Mahony's predecessor sent for treatment in New Mexico. Mahony kept Garcia there after a lawyer warned in 1986 that the archdiocese could face "severe civil liability" if he returned and reoffended. Garcia had admitted raping an 11-year-old boy and later told a psychologist he molested 15 to 17 young boys.

"If Monsignor Garcia were to reappear here within the archdiocese, we might very well have some type of legal action filed in both the criminal and civil sectors," Mahony wrote to the director of Garcia's New Mexico treatment program.

Mahony then sent Garcia to another treatment center, but Garcia returned to LA in 1988 after being removed from ministry. He then contacted a victim's mother and asked to spend time with her younger son, according to a letter in the file.

Mahony moved to defrock him in 1989, and Garcia died a decade later.

Three injured in shooting at Texas college: police

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Shooting broke out between two people on the campus of Lone Star College near Houston on Tuesday and there were three injuries, including one of the shooters, police and a school spokesman said.

One of the shooters was in police custody and the other fled the campus, according to college spokesman Jed Young. He said it was not clear if they were students.

"The school is under control but still under evacuation," Young said.

Student Amanda Vasquez said she was waiting for an English class to start in a campus building when she heard shots.

"I heard about 6 shots ... Kids started rushing down the hallway. It really happened so fast," she told CNN news.

Vasquez said people in the classroom closed the door, turned off the lights and put a table against the door.

The shooting occurred just over a month after a gunman killed 20 students and six staff at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

The Lone Star College System is the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area, according to its website. Student enrollment is 90,000 and there are six colleges in the system.

There have been three separate shootings at schools and colleges in the United States in the past two weeks.

On January 10, a student armed with a shotgun opened fire at a California high school, wounding a fellow student. A second student also received minor injures at Taft Union High School in Taft, California, about 30 miles southwest of Bakersfield.

On January 15, a student armed with a pistol opened fire at Stevens Institute of business & Arts in downtown St. Louis, shooting a school employee and then turning the gun on himself.

Also on January 15, two people were killed and a third wounded when gunfire broke out in the parking lot of a community college in eastern Kentucky. Authorities said that shooting was a result of a domestic conflict.

ANA cancels 141 more flights with 787 jet grounded

TOKYO (Reuters) - All Nippon Airways will cancel 123 domestic and 18 international flights between Wednesday and Sunday after Boeing Co's 787 Dreamliner passenger plane was grounded, the Japanese airline said Monday.

More than 18,000 passengers will be affected.

The cancellations announced on Monday add to the 72 flights scheduled from January 19 to January 22 that ANA called off last week.

ANA, which flies the most Dreamliners of any airline, also said in the statement it will announce flight cancellations for January 28 later in the day and plans to announce cancellations occurring for dates from January 29 on Thursday.

On Sunday, U.S. safety investigators ruled out excess voltage as the cause of a battery fire last month on a 787 jet operated by Japan Airlines Co (JAL) and said they were expanding the probe to look at the battery's charger and the jet's auxiliary power unit.

Pipe bending machines and pipe forming machines: advantages of electrical and hydraulic systems in a newly developed transfluid-solution combined

New hybrid drive system for tube processing machines

A new hybrid drive system of transfluid provides more precision, energy efficiency and performance in advanced tube processing technologies.

Compromises in many areas of everyday life might often be a good way. When developing new technologies they prevent often the best solution. In tube processing this applies especially to the selection of the drive system for pipe bending machines and pipe forming machines or manufacturing cells for tube processing. Electric drives are energy efficient, highly accurate and largely independent of external influences. The hydraulic drives have a unique power density and robustness. No system can to cover both as standard. This gap covers transfluid with a new development. For the best solution, the engineers of the South Westphalian (Germany) transfluid Maschinenbau GmbH have developed a unique system that combines some advantages of both systems and exclude disadvantages. With these new hybrid drive options, the advanced tube processing technology is brought into best form.

Up to 20% increase in energy efficiency
The hybrid drives are effectively matched to the requirements of the corresponding pipe forming machines and pipe bending machines. Hydraulic units of the new system are equipped with constant pumps and are driven by a powerful servo motor. Almost the entire control of the system takes place via the power or rotation speed of the motor. It is very energy efficient. Generally improves the energy efficiency by 15 to 20 %, since the power is always given in accordance with the consumer.

Quieter, smaller, more precise
Its advantages shows the technology especially in areas where powerful drives are requiredas well as with several hydraulic cylinders of different sizes and at different speeds. This applies especially for pipe bending processes and axial pipe forming machines. The hybrid drives are not only smaller and much quieter in operation. Also the heating in the process is minimized. The hydraulic unit needs up to 20% less volume of oil and the required performance of the external cooler is correspondingly lower.

?Efficient machines need efficient drive?
Unique for hydraulic drives is the new positioning accuracy due to the hybrid system. Since each consumer is supplied with a specific volume of oil positions (depending on the consumer) can be approached in the 1/10 mm range. Via the electrical control, the consumption volumes are preselected or stored and via the rotational speed of the drive motor submitted precise.

Responsible for high precision means is not least the specially designed control system. It provides a synchronization of the desired speed of the consumer in relation to the required volume. To ensure that no excess volume is generated. With the combination of electronics and hydraulics, the new solution of transfluid , thus ensuring improved efficiency and ensures that requirements are met in the best possible terms of drive technology.

transfluid Maschinenbau GmbH ? the solution for tubes

Since 1988 transfluid continually improved technologies in tube processing to meet customers? demands, offering optimum, tailor-made solutions in machine and plant construction, that are used in the automobile, ship building and furniture industries as well as the construction of railings and conveyor technology. America's national parks weigh solitude against cellular access

19 hrs.

As cell phones, iPods and laptops creep steadily into every corner of modern life, America's national parks have stayed largely off the digital grid, among the last remaining outposts of ringtone-free human solitude.

For better or worse, that may soon change.

Under pressure from telecommunications companies and a growing number of park visitors who feel adrift without mobile-phone reception, the airwaves in such grand getaway destinations as Yellowstone National Park may soon be abuzz with new wireless signals.

That prospect has given pause to a more traditional cohort of park visitors who cherish the unplugged tranquility of the great outdoors, fearing an intrusion of mobile phones ??and the sound of idle chatter ??will diminish their experience.

Some have mixed emotions. Stephanie Smith, a 50-something Montana native who visits Yellowstone as many as six times a year, said she prefers the cry of an eagle to ring tones.

But she also worries that future generations may lose their appreciation for the value of nature and the need to preserve America's outdoor heritage if a lack of technology discourages them from visiting.

"You have to get there to appreciate it," Smith said. "It's a new world ??and technology is a part of it."

Balancing the two aesthetics has emerged as the latest challenge facing the National Park Service as managers in at least two premier parks, Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, consider recent requests to install new telecommunications towers or upgrade existing ones.

There is no system-wide rule governing cellular facilities in the 300 national parks, national monuments and other units the agency administers nationwide. Wireless infrastructure decisions are left up to the managers of individual park units.

The agency's mission statement requires it to protect park resources and the visitor experience, but each individual experience is unique, said Lee Dickinson, a special-uses program manager for the Park Service.

"I've had two visitors calling me literally within hours of each other who wanted exactly the opposite experience: One saying he didn't vacation anywhere without electronic access and the other complaining he was disturbed by another park visitor ordering pizza on his cell phone," Dickinson said.

Can?you hear me now?
Wireless supporters say more is at stake than the convenience of casual phone conversations. Cellular providers say new wireless infrastructure will boost public safety by improving communications among park rangers and emergency responders.

They argue that the ability to download smartphone applications that can deliver instant information on plants and animals will also enrich park visitors' experiences.

"Our customers are telling us that having access to technology will enhance their visit to wild areas," said Bob Kelley, spokesman for Verizon Wireless, which is seeking to install a new 100-foot cell tower at Yellowstone.

Rural communities that border the national parks also stand to benefit from enlarged cellular coverage areas.

On the other side of the debate, outdoor enthusiasts worry that bastions of quiet reflection could be transformed into noisy hubs where visitors yak on cell phones and fidget with electronic tablets, detracting from the ambience of such natural wonders as Yellowstone's celebrated geyser Old Faithful.

Expanding cellular reception may even compromise safety by giving some tourists a false sense of security in the back country, where extremes in weather and terrain test even the most skilled outdoorsman, according to the National Parks Conservation Association.

Tim Stevens, the association's Northern Rockies director, said distractions like meandering moose already challenge the attention of motorists clogging park roads at the height of the summer tourist season.

"People brake in the middle of the road to watch animals. The added distraction of a wireless signal ??allowing a driver to text Aunt Madge to say how great the trip is ??could have disastrous consequences," he said.

Yellowstone already offers some limited mobile-phone service, afforded by four cellular towers previously erected in developed sections of the park.

But vast swathes of America's oldest national park, which spans nearly 3,500 square miles across the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, still lack wireless reception in an age dominated by Wi-Fi and iPad users who expect access even in the most remote locations.

Park officials see definite signs that a portion of the roughly 3 million annual visitors to Yellowstone, which crafted a wireless plan in 2008, are finding the lack of cell phone coverage disconcerting.

Park spokesman Al Nash said he routinely fields calls from anxious relatives of Yellowstone visitors unable to contact their loved ones.

"They say, 'My gosh, my niece, daughter or parents went to Yellowstone, and we haven't heard from them for three days,'" he said.?

Loneliness, like chronic stress, taxes the immune system

COLUMBUS, Ohio New research links loneliness to a number of dysfunctional immune responses, suggesting that being lonely has the potential to harm overall health.

Researchers found that people who were more lonely showed signs of elevated latent herpes virus reactivation and produced more inflammation-related proteins in response to acute stress than did people who felt more socially connected.

These proteins signal the presence of inflammation, and chronic inflammation is linked to numerous conditions, including coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer's disease, as well as the frailty and functional decline that can accompany aging.

Reactivation of a latent herpes virus is known to be associated with stress, suggesting that loneliness functions as a chronic stressor that triggers a poorly controlled immune response.

"It is clear from previous research that poor-quality relationships are linked to a number of health problems, including premature mortality and all sorts of other very serious health conditions. And people who are lonely clearly feel like they are in poor-quality relationships," said Lisa Jaremka, a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research at Ohio State University and lead author of the research.

"One reason this type of research is important is to understand how loneliness and relationships broadly affect health. The more we understand about the process, the more potential there is to counter those negative effects to perhaps intervene. If we don't know the physiological processes, what are we going to do to change them?"

The results are based on a series of studies conducted with two populations: a healthy group of overweight middle-aged adults and a group of breast cancer survivors. The researchers measured loneliness in all studies using the UCLA Loneliness Scale, a questionnaire that assesses perceptions of social isolation and loneliness.

Jaremka will present the research Saturday (1/19) at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology annual meeting in New Orleans.

The researchers first sought to obtain a snapshot of immune system behavior related to loneliness by gauging levels of antibodies in the blood that are produced when herpes viruses are reactivated.

Participants were 200 breast cancer survivors who were between two months and three years past completion of cancer treatment with an average age of 51 years. Their blood was analyzed for the presence of antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus.

Both are herpes viruses that infect a majority of Americans. About half of infections do not produce illness, but once a person is infected, the viruses remain dormant in the body and can be reactivated, resulting in elevated antibody levels, or titers again, often producing no symptoms but hinting at regulatory problems in the cellular immune system.

Lonelier participants had higher levels of antibodies against cytomegalovirus than did less lonely participants, and those higher antibody levels were related to more pain, depression and fatigue symptoms. No difference was seen in Epstein-Barr virus antibody levels, possibly because this reactivation is linked to age and many of these participants were somewhat older, meaning reactivation related to loneliness would be difficult to detect, Jaremka said.

Previous research has suggested that stress can promote reactivation of these viruses, also resulting in elevated antibody titers.

"The same processes involved in stress and reactivation of these viruses is probably also relevant to the loneliness findings," Jaremka said. "Loneliness has been thought of in many ways as a chronic stressor a socially painful situation that can last for quite a long time."

In an additional set of studies, the scientists sought to determine how loneliness affected the production of proinflammatory proteins, or cytokines, in response to stress. These studies were conducted with 144 women from the same group of breast cancer survivors and a group of 134 overweight middle-aged and older adults with no major health problems.

Baseline blood samples were taken from all participants, who were then subjected to stress they were asked to deliver an impromptu five-minute speech and perform a mental arithmetic task in front of a video camera and three panelists. Researchers followed by stimulating the participants' immune systems with lipopolysaccharide, a compound found on bacterial cell walls that is known to trigger an immune response.

In both populations, those who were lonelier produced significantly higher levels of a cytokine called interleukin-6, or IL-6, in response to acute stress than did participants who were more socially connected. Levels of another cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, also rose more dramatically in lonelier participants than in less lonely participants, but the findings were significant by statistical standards in only one study group, the healthy adults.

In the study with breast cancer survivors, researchers also tested for levels of the cytokine interleukin 1-beta, which was produced at higher levels in lonelier participants.

When the scientists controlled for a number of factors, including sleep quality, age and general health measures, the results were the same.

"We saw consistency in the sense that more lonely people in both studies had more inflammation than less lonely people," Jaremka said.

"It's also important to remember the flip side, which is that people who feel very socially connected are experiencing more positive outcomes," she said.
