How to connect to a Windows based AMI in Amazon Web Services (IT Toolbox Blogs)

How to connect to a Windows based AMI in Amazon Web Services

?

This is a video of how to connect to a Windows AMI using windows. This is based on the EC2 for Poets entry over on ec2 for poets web site.

?

?

The idea behind this was to help people understand how to connect to a windows AMI when using a windows box. And how to work the crypto so you can get the windows administrative password from Amazon when doing this.

?

?

?

Some caveats, the video pauses part way through because it can take up to 20 minutes for Amazon to generate your windows password and run through its checks to make sure everything started ok. Another caveat to this is that while the password is protected you need to use your PEM file rather than the generated PPK file like you would use when connecting to a Linux AMI. If you want to know how to connect to a Linux AMI, please see this video on how to do that because you have to generate a PPK file from your PEM file that Amazon gives you.

?

You also need to make sure you change your windows Administrative password from the Amazon generated one so that it will conform to the company or corporation you work for. If you have any questions feel free to drop a note below and let me know what the issues are. This is pretty straight forward, but can take upwards of 30 minutes to get your Windows AMI working and logged in.
