Bobcats end 18-game skid with 91-81 win over Bulls

CHICAGO (AP) ? Kemba Walker had 18 points and eight rebounds, and the Charlotte Bobcats ended an 18-game losing streak with a 91-81 win over the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday.

Gerald Henderson added 16 points and reserve Ben Gordon had 15 to help Charlotte snap the second-longest skid in team history. It was the Bobcats' first win in their last 10 road games.

Luol Deng scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Chicago. Carlos Boozer also had a double-double with 19 points and 14 boards.

Charlotte fended off several rallies by the Bulls, who never held a lead, to win for the first time since Nov. 24.

Tied at 65 heading into the fourth quarter, Charlotte went on a 10-0 run to pad its lead as boos began raining down from the irritated Bulls faithful, who have endured inconsistency as they await the return of former MVP Derrick Rose, who is recovering from knee surgery.

The Bulls chipped away at a 12-point deficit in the third quarter, eventually tying the game at 65 on Richard Hamilton's second-chance jumper with 39 seconds left, but Chicago went ice-cold from the field in the fourth.

Squandering an ample lead is nothing new to the Bobcats ? hanging onto one is.

Charlotte led by as many as 21 in the first half Saturday against New Orleans, eventually losing 98-95.

It looked to be the same old story for the Bobcats heading into the fourth, but a 10-0 run to start the quarter gave the Bobcats enough momentum to stop a seemingly never-ending losing streak.

The new year couldn't come quick enough for Charlotte (8-23), which narrowly avoided posting a 0-16 calendar month for the second time in 2012. The Bobcats went 0-16 in April to end last season on a franchise-worst 23-game losing streak.

Ramon Sessions scored 11 first-half points to give Charlotte a five-point advantage at the break. He finished with 15.

The Bobcats shot over 50 percent from the field in the first half, but struggled from the free throw line, hitting just six of 15 attempts to keep Chicago in the game.

Chicago (16-13) shot 35.1 percent from the floor and hit just four of 16 3-point attempts.

Notes: Bulls G Kirk Hinrich was ruled out before the game due to "a compilation of things," according to coach Tom Thibodeau. He is considered day-to-day. . Thibodeau said he was "sad" to hear about the firing of Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith. "You hate to see anyone lose their job, but that's the nature of the beast," he said. . Bobcats F Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (scratched right cornea) did not play after being poked in the eye during a 98-95 loss to New Orleans on Saturday.

The Symptoms Of Cervical Cancer | Cervical dysplasia - abnormal ...

Cervical cancer is another form of uterine cancer. It begins in the cells on the surface of the cervix, either on the lower part, or in the upper part of the cervix. It is a slow-growing and malignant cancer. (Malignant simply means that it spreads). The cervix is the connector that connects the uterus to the birth canal, and is actually a part of the uterus.

Cervical cancer is usually the result of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is spread through sexual contact. The virus can survive in the body for many years before it causes cancer, and in some cases the cancer never develops.

A new vaccine is available to stop the virus, and medical professionals are encouraging young girls and women to get the vaccine. The claim is that by the year 2022 cervical cancers will be reduced due to the vaccine. But the vaccine is still to new, to know about all the possible long-term side-effects it will cause. The best way to be on guard against this cancer is to build up the immune system and eliminate as many risk factors as possible.

Those at highest risk for developing this cancer are young girls who became sexually active before the age of 18, and those who have, or have had numerous partners. Those who smoke, use birth control pill, condoms and tampons are also at a higher risk.

The symptoms of cervical cancer may not appear until the later stages of the cancer, but pre-cancerous cells can be detected with a pap test.

The following symptoms may occur in the more advanced stages of cervical cancer.

- Bleeding in between periods, or after menopause. This can be heavy or light bleeding.

- Pelvic pains which can be dull or sharp pains, and can last for hours.

- A vaginal discharge may also occur, and may be foul smelling, thick, and may contain mucus or blood.

- Leaking of urine or feces from vagina.

- Bleeding after intercourse.

- Pain during intercourse.

- Pain or heavy bleeding while menstruating.

- Pain during urinating can occur if cancer has spread to the bladder.

- Loss of appetite, which can lead to weight loss.

Other symptoms may include fatigue, back pain, leg pain, a single swollen leg, and easy fracturing of the bones.

Treatments are available; one can choose either conventional treatments which consist of chemo, radiation and surgery, or, one can choose to be healed naturally using Chinese medicines, or herbs.

Austin's newest Catholic Church dedicated

AUSTIN? --?After three years of planning, fundraising, and construction, Catholics in northwest Austin have a new place to worship.

The Austin Diocese held a dedication for the new Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church Saturday morning. A joyful procession, from the old into the new.

As parishoners crossed the threshold into the new building, many?were in awe. The smiles on their faces come from more than just the beauty of this place of worship with its fixtures made of limestone from Jeruselum and stained glass windows.

This is a vision come to life.

"Well the journey began in 1995 when I was asked to begin this parish community in northwest Austin. And we began to meet at Deer Park Middle School on Anderson Mill Road," said Reverend Danny Garcia.

The congregation of 230 families grew into 550. In 2001 the parish built a multi purpose building. But now the congregation has nearly tripled in size to 1400 families.

"Anytime you start a parish church, people want a church. And, but people are always 'well how are we going to build it?' and I said well, it's gotta be your gift. No one gives us money to start to build, it's got to be people's sacrafice," said Garcia.

Parishoners pledged to give more than $5 million to pay for their new church. It took 16 months to build.

The new sanctuary holds more than 1200 people, but it's designed to maintain the intamacy that the congregation has come to expect in thier church. In the new sanctuary, no seat is more than 75 feet away from the alter. An alter that was blessed by the bishop of the Austin Diocese, Reverend Joe Vasquez in a ceremony Saturday morning.

Austin area priests sprinkled holy water, anointed the alter and walls with oil, and sealed relics of the church's patron saint beneath the alter.

With the lighting of the alter and church the light of Saint Vincent de Paul will shine brighter in the Austin community.

Suspected U.S. drone kills three al-Qaida militants in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Three al-Qaida militants were killed in a suspected U.S. drone strike in southern Yemen, Yemeni security officials said, the fourth such attack this week and a sign attacks from unmanned aircraft are on the upswing in the country.

The officials said the three men were hit as they were riding in a Land Cruiser in el-Manaseh village on the outskirts of Radda in Bayda province. Dozens of local al-Qaida-linked fighters protested the drone strikes after traditional Islamic Friday prayers.

Earlier this week another suspected U.S. drone strike killed two militants in Radda itself, Yemeni security officials say, and seven were killed in two other strikes in the southeastern province of Hadramawt. Four suspected drone strikes a week is uncommon in Yemen.

According to statistics gathered by the Long War Journal before Saturday's attacks, the United States "is known to have carried out 41 airstrikes" this year against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), as the group's branch in Yemen is known. That makes for an average of around three to four strikes per month.

The Journal, a product of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies that was founded by former U.S. officials, says that since December 2009, the CIA and the US military's Joint Special Operations Command are known to have conducted at least 54 air and missile strikes inside Yemen, excluding Saturday's suspected attack.

AQAP overran entire towns and villages ? including Radda ? last year by taking advantage of a security lapse during nationwide protests that eventually ousted the country's longtime ruler. Backed by the U.S. military, Yemen's army was able to regain control of the southern region but al-Qaida militants continue to launch deadly attacks on security forces that have killed hundreds.

Also on Saturday, two gunmen on a motorbike shot and killed an intelligence officer in the southeast, security officials said. They said that the officer, Mutea Baqutian, was on his way to work in Mukalla, capital of Hadramawt province, when the men stopped his car, gunned him down, and fled.

The government has blamed al-Qaida militants for similar assassinations of several senior military and intelligence officials this year. The bullet-riddled body of Major al-Numeiry Abdo al-Oudi, deputy director of the security department of al-Qitten in Hadramawt, was found in the town's suburbs last week. He had been kidnapped earlier in the month.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity according to regulations.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Ahmed Seif, who is commander of Yemen's central military region, said the Defense Ministry has deployed an infantry brigade in the northeastern province of Marib to stop armed tribesmen who maintain cordial ties with al-Qaida from attacking oil pipelines and power generating stations, as well as to counter al-Qaida militants.

State TV meanwhile aired a meeting between President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi and eight Yemeni sailors who were rescued last week by forces of Somalia's semiautonomous Puntland region after being held for nearly three years by Somali pirates.

The Puntland government says that its forces captured the hijacked Panama-flagged MV Iceberg 1 on Sunday after a siege that lasted two weeks. They freed the eight Yemeni sailors together with five Indians, two Pakistanis, four Ghanaians, two Sudanese and a Filipino. The ship was hijacked March 29, 2010.

Hadi congratulated the eight sailors for their safety and ordered the government to compensate them for their suffering.

Eqbal Yassin, a relative of one of the freed sailors, told The Associated Press that the hijackers had allowed some sailors to phone their relatives and convey the pirates' demand for $5 million ransom. He said he was told by his relative that the hijackers killed a Yemeni sailor who tried to escape. He gave no further details.

After setbacks, Russia boosts space spending

MOSCOW | Thu Dec 27, 2012 2:43pm EST

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The country that oversaw the launch of the world's first artificial satellite hopes to regain some of its former glory with a big boost in space spending announced by Russia on Thursday after a series of failures.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev approved a plan to spend 2.1 trillion roubles ($68.71 billion) on developing Russia's space industry from 2013 to 2020, state-run RIA news agency reported.

"The programme will enable our country to effectively participate in forward-looking projects, such as the International Space Station (ISS), the study of the Moon, Mars and other celestial bodies in the solar system," Medvedev was quoted as saying.

Despite the launch by the former Soviet Union of Sputnik 1 in 1957, triggering the Cold War space race, Russia's space programme has suffered a series of humiliating setbacks in the past year.

These have mostly involved unmanned missions such as satellite launches, that industry veterans blame on a decade of crimped budgets and a brain drain.

Russia budgeted about 100 billion roubles ($3.3 billion) for space programmes annually in 2010 and 2011, far less than the yearly average of the amount Medvedev announced, but he said some of the money would come from outside the state budget.

The failure of a workhorse Proton rocket after launch in August caused the multimillion-dollar loss of an Indonesian and a Russian satellite. A similar problem caused the loss of a $265 million communications satellite last year.

Medvedev criticized the state of the industry in August, saying problems were costing Russia prestige and money.

Since the retirement of its space shuttle fleet last year, U.S. space agency NASA has been relying on Russia to take astronauts to the ISS at a cost of $60 million each, and plans to continue until its own new craft is developed in 2017.

Political expediency can make a sudden feminist out of anyone, apparently. Self Improvement Tips That Can Get You Out Of Your Slump | Gifts ...

Head to a movie with your best friend if anxiety is a problem in your life. You will be out and about but not have to socialize as much. It can also be an effective way for you to become more comfortable with being near a large group of people.

TIP! Everyone screws up sometime and does something they should not. Stress is just as harmful to the body as eating bad foods.

If you do not know how to grow personally, you have come to the right place! Keeping an open mind and using the tips that this article will provide you will help you reach any personal development goals you may have.

Learn the habits that successful people practice, and build them into your own life. Concentrate on practicing some vital core habits at first, and keep at it until they become second nature to you. New habits are developed over approximately twenty-one days so a little patience will go a long way when you are improving your habits.

TIP! Understand that there is a divide between where you are and where you wish to go. You cannot successfully make the journey from here to there if you do not know the intervening territory.

When you are pursuing your personal development goals, having setbacks can be discouraging and make you feel like a failure. Failure is just a learning experience incognito. Failure is simply another method of determining what have been losses in your life and what have been your strengths. When you look at it from that perspective, failure can be considered a good thing, as it helps you know more about your personal makeup.

Begin a special savings for emergencies. Most of the time, it seems that the smallest unexpected expense adds more credit card debt. All you will need to do is save a couple of dollars per week. This will be able to get you through a short term crisis like unemployment or a large unexpected health care bill.

TIP! Knowing what you want out of life and how to get there are great tools for personal development. Broad objectives are extremely useful and can lend a positive outlook on life.

Find a book that you can turn to for encouragement. For some people, that would be a religious text, and for others, it might be something like an inspirational book of quotes. Knowing that there is some source of encouragement to which you can turn will improve your mental state and make it easier to face life?s challenges.

Ultimate happiness may lie in assuming a manageable amount of risk. Most people don?t want to risk feelings of rejection or failure, so they never travel from their comfort zone, eventually causing dissatisfaction. If you take risks, chances are you will be happier.

TIP! Being selfless is an important part of personal development. If you understand the importance of caring for others at your own expense, you can build stronger character.

Making yourself number one, and not overextending yourself, is very important. Do not focus on your own happiness to the exclusion of others? needs, but definitely make it a priority. They key is to stay true to your beliefs, and then you can have a much greater chance at happiness in your self improvement.

You may find it helpful to discuss your issues with a counselor or other trusted professional, such as your pastor. They are trained to help you with issues, and also are experienced. These impartial listeners can provide a sympathetic ear or help you deal with troublesome areas of your life. Talking to someone who knows how to listen and help will make you happier, and allow you to reach your goals.

TIP! Several people have difficulty meeting someone worthwhile to date. You should consider using the Internet.

Setting and reaching some short term goals can jump start your path to a happy, healthy life. By taking some time our for yourself to focus on both strengths and weaknesses, you will notice overall self-improvement.

Accomplish the things in life you want to accomplish. Sitting and thinking about the life you want will not get you that life. Take action, and turn your dreams into reality.

TIP! When trying to handle depression, focus on your diet and increase your complex carbohydrates. If your complex carb intake is lower than recommended, your body won?t produce enough serotonin.

Find out how successful people improved themselves. Studying the processes used by others will help you better develop your own personal development strategies. Reading about the lessons they have learned will have a positive impact on your own self improvement.

Choose one element of your life to focus on improving. If you focus all your efforts on that one thing, then the change will come faster and easier. By slowly introducing things one at a time, it is much easier to stick with these personality changes in the long-term.

TIP! Examine your inner self instead of your external appearance. It really does not matter what expensive clothing you wear, or if you look like someone from a magazine shoot.

Remove the disorganization from all aspects of your life. If you are able to get your life organized and keep it that way, you will see a real boost to your self-confidence. This will also lead to less stress because the disorganization contributing to it will be eliminated. It is soothing to know that everything is where it belongs.

Take a notebook around with you to jot ideas in. Keep a small notepad and pen with you at all times. If an idea grabs you while you are on the subway, write it down, then do something about it when inspiration strikes.

TIP! If you are not able to achieve anything you wanted to, it is time to evaluate the situation seriously. One way to check yourself is to go online and read what others have experienced when aiming for the same kind of achievements.

Use the knowledge you have and be modest in order to live your life to the fullest. You can learn from the situations that you deal with on a daily basis. Ensure you can recognize what circumstances can?t be changed in your life. You will be less likely to bit off more than you can chew if you remain modest. Use the wisdom gained from past mistakes to make your future choices more positive and empowering.

Pick up a book to find out more about personal development. Having a good personal development book can give you insight and advice that will make a difference in your life forever. Be sure that you pick out a book that has been favorably reviewed because a lot of the times, these type of books can be poorly written.

TIP! Have a clear understanding of the obstacles between you and your success. This seems to be hard from some people.

When working on your personal development, you need to value yourself and what is best for your life. Make reaching your goals one of the most important aspects of your life.

Do what you can to remove unnecessary stress from your life. To avoid stress, try to remain calm when something unexpected happens. You should remember that not everything is perfect, and try to fix the problem when it arises.

On the road to personal development, treat your body with respect. Never allow yourself to become dehydrated or overly hungry. By doing that, your body will perform better later on in the future. If you disregard your body?s intelligence, you might find in the future that it will not be able to take care of you.

TIP! Make sure that you have specific and tangible personal development goals. If you have more tangible goals in mind, you?ll be able to better resolve how you might accomplish them.

It is essential to have a clearly outlined goal, when working toward improving self improvement. Create a specific goal for yourself. A specific goal will often achieve the desired results.

When you are trying to improve yourself, you should aim to have a high amount of self-discipline. You should strive to control your temptations and increase your self control. You can conquer many desires such as lust, drunkenness, or greed. Using self-control and restraining from these horrid vices can protect you from the negative effects they may have on your body and mind.

TIP! Even if you feel the need to change and grow, you will not do so until you choose to. Unless you understand and accept the fact that it will require change, personal growth will be almost impossible for you to achieve.

By using love, you can re-energize your faith and get closer to your self improvement goals. You must have love to have faith. You will also make decisions guided by your core beliefs. Faith and love can lead you to help those in need, and believe in people when they need it most, especially yourself.

Everyone needs to exercise, not just people who want to lose weight. There are lots of good, healthy reasons for exercising. For one thing, exercise stimulates your brain to produce chemicals that improve your mood.

Growing as a person requires improving your health. Exercising and eating nutritious foods are core to a healthy lifestyle, but you also need to be able to stay with your regimen. When you are healthy, you feel your best and therefore can be more effective in all the other areas of your life.

Become awesome at something you?re passionate about. Your aspiration to greatness is usually pointed to by your passion. No one can be perfect at everything, but we all aspire to provide inspiration to others. Enhance your standing in your niche, and your self-esteem will climb too.

A leader knows how to be modest, yet assertive. Be critical yet gentle in your approach, and remember, one must learn how to serve before he can lead. A leader is a person of integrity and virtue. These are admirable qualities for anybody to possess, so work on being more like a leader today.

When you?re looking for employment, having a degree is often essential. It typically does not matter what school that degree came from though. However, there are some instances, such as with financial institutions, that this may not be the case. Obtaining the degree in the first place should be the primary goal.

It?s often said that listening is no less important than speaking when it comes to effective communication. This is very true for personal development skills. Always pay attention to what you are telling yourself. You will have a hard time finding what your goals are if you are not listening to yourself.

One interesting trait the might be worth developing is called ?sexual capital.? Sexual capitol does not mean employing your sexuality as a tool in procuring what you want out of life. This means to use charisma instead. Not everyone has good social skills, but these can help you go farther in all aspects of your life.

Avoiding a decision means missing out on an opportunity when engaging in personal development. This may mean you need to make decisions without having perfect information about the outcomes of those decisions. Being able to make good decisions sometime requires you to trust your instincts. Even when you make a bad decision, you can learn valuable lessons from your experience. A bad choice will just open up the door for a better one.

You should now have a better idea how to maintain an optimistic outlook and plan. Keep any eye out for new information and use this information towards your self improvement.

Getting to Know You: Why Personalization is the ... - Kobie Marketing

?

The second in Kobie?s end-of-year predictions (big data, personalization, mobile, and channel convergence) got me thinking about The King and I, the famous Rodgers and Hammerstein musical and its iconic song.

For those of you who don?t know it, the chorus goes like this:

Getting to know you,
Getting to know all about you.
Getting to like you,
Getting to hope you like me.

It?s amazing that these 20 words, written in 1951, do a better job encapsulating the goal of personalization and loyalty?s essence than many conference sessions I?ve attended or articles I?ve read. Kudos to simplicity.

The Loyalty Show Must Go On

In 2013 greater personalization will become critical because that?s what consumers have always wanted and, more accurately, yearned for since the early information age when consumers became numbers to be crunched rather than names with histories to be learned. Now, thanks to the proliferation of smart mobile devices, the Big Data they accumulate and the granular consumer information they turn into actionable engagement, personalization is up for revival.

As in any good show there are at least two acts, in this case it?s ?Personalization 1.0? and ?Personalization 2.0,? And both could use a few more ?dress rehearsals? before the New Year stops feeling, well, so new.

Personalization 1.0 speaks to the need for personalized SMS, emails or even web landing pages. Think about The Weather Channel app and its homepage. Type in your zip code and not only will you get a region-specific graphical forecast, complete with a current conditions skyscape, you?ll see corresponding videos too. Netflix is another company that tailors its mobile web and app landing pages to the individual?s specific movie and genre interests. Although this seems like ?personalization 1.0,? many brands are still missing opportunities to tailor their customers? experience in even these relatively simple and straightforward ways.

Standing O For the Second Act

Beyond personalized SMS and emails, look to personalize, in real time, ?consumer-facing touch points that integrate further with social media through emerging tools like gamification and augmented reality (AR) ? an increasingly popular technology which pulls digital information from web-based sources. That includes sites like Google Maps and social networks like LinkedIn and Facebook. AR superimposes that data on real-time images of physical world objects such as restaurants (so consumers can browse menus simply by pointing their smartphones at the buildings), hotels, retail stores, airports, etc. While it?s still a technology looking to fully hit its stride, the recent turnaround in mainstream media is particularly exciting. Juniper research already predicts AR apps will generate $300 million in global revenue in 2013. Not bad for a technology that was largely dismissed during most of 2012.

The bottom line is that consumers want their brand interaction to be personal, genuine and on their channel(s) of choice ? whatever, whenever and wherever they may be. They don?t just want personalization 1.0. They?re yearning for something better. They want a loyalty marketing and customer reward program that has a King and I effect: an experience to be enjoyed time and time again ? and in multiple channels.

For The King and I, that meant Broadway revivals, new casts and a major motion picture. For rewards programs, multichannel (and omnichannel) it means smartphones, tablets, SMS, social media, kiosks, digital signage, traditional print, TV, radio and actual physical customer interaction. Great reward programs, like great performers, may alter the specifics of their delivery. But the basics of what underlies their continued success must remain consistent.

So think about the ?getting to know you? chorus. Simple words but profound enough for every loyalty program manager. And please check back in a few days for the next in our 2013 predictions. We?ll be looking at mobile trends and how our ever-smarter smart devices are becoming their own loyalty success.

Treatment Talk ? 5 Reasons Addiction is Ruining Your Life ...

addiction, recovery

As this year comes to a close and you look to 2013, what better time to consider changing any?bad habits?that may be damaging your life.?

Bad habits can keep you stuck and some, like addiction, can even change the course of your life. Your best life is waiting for you when you are ready?to dig deep, overcome your fear and take on the challenge to begin again.

Without further ado, I?m pleased to present a guest post by M. Farouk Radwan.

Most people who are addicted to a certain substance have an idea about its harmful effects but what most people don?t know is that there are other harmful side effects for addictions that many people are not aware of.

Apart from the health effects you know about there are other bad mental effects that result from addiction. And while many people forget about the physical risks when they do a bad habit still they can change their minds if they knew about the short term mental effects that these bad habits cause.

Do you know that your bad habit can be the reason for your depression, sadness or anxiety?

Read the following lines to know how your bad habits can affect you.

How addiction ruins your life:

1. Dopamine disturbance: when you get addicted to anything even food the levels of dopamine in your brain gets disturbed. Dopamine Is the chemical responsible for activating the reward system in the brain. The more you do your bad habit the less sensitive your brain becomes to dopamine and as a result the more boring your life becomes. Because new things rarely manage to stimulate your brain the way your bad habit does your life becomes dull, unsatisfying and boring.

2. Low testosterone:? Testosterone is produced by both males and females. Testosterone reduces depression and prevents many of the bad moods people experience. It was found that people who occasionally drink alcohol have 20% less testosterone produced in their bodies.? As for hard core drinkers their bodies produce 40-50% less testosterone. In other words, alcohol will ruin your manhood if you are a man and your mood if you are a woman.

3. Addiction reduces self esteem: When the dopamine levels in the brain drop as a result of addiction the person experiences more anxiety and becomes more self conscious. This leads to a reduced self esteem. Many of those who gave? up on addiction reported feeling much more confident and experienced great improvements in their social relations.

4. Guilt will ruin your mood: Even if you think that its completely ok to do the bad habit you are doing your subconscious mind will be accumulating guilt each time you do it. After a long time of commitment to your bad habit you will start getting used to that guilt and your normal state of feeling will be a bad mood. In other words you will always be feeling bad but you will assume that that?s how you should be feeling anyway!

5. Stress and tension: don?t try to fool yourself by believing that the health warnings you read or the values you were raised to believe in wont have an effect on your mood. Any conflict happens in the brain will result in stress. If you kept doing your bad habit even though you believe that its wrong then you will get subjected to a high level of stress which will ruin your mood as well.

Final words

Addiction doesn?t only affect your health in a bad way but it also affects your hormone levels, state of mind and mood. Even if you believe that your addiction is totally harms you will be shocked to know about the real psychological effects it can have upon you.

Save yourself and stop your bad habits today.

Netflix blames Amazon for Christmas Eve outage

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An outage at one of Amazon's web service centers hit users of Netflix Inc's streaming video service on Christmas Eve and was not fully resolved until Christmas Day, a spokesman for the movie rental company said on Tuesday.

The outage impacted Netflix subscribers across Canada, Latin America and the United States, and affected various devices that enable users to stream movies and television shows from home, Netflix spokesman Joris Evers said. Such devices range from gaming consoles like the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 to Blu-ray DVD players.

Netflix, which is based in Los Gatos, California, has 30 million streaming subscribers worldwide, of which more than 27 million are in the Americas region that was exposed to the outage and could have potentially been affected, Evers said.

Evers said the issue was the result of an outage at an Amazon Web Services' cloud computing center in Virginia and started at about 12:30 p.m. PST (2030 GMT) on Monday and was fully restored before 8:00 a.m. PST Tuesday morning, although streaming was available for most users by 11:00 p.m. PST on Monday.

The event marks the latest in a series of outages from Amazon Web Services, with one occurring in April of last year that knocked out such sites as Reddit and Foursquare.

"We are investigating exactly what happened and how it could have been prevented," Evers of Netflix said.

"We are happy that people opening gifts of Netflix or Netflix capable devices can watch TV shows and movies and apologize for any inconvenience caused last night," he added.

Officials at Amazon Web Services were not available for comment. Evers, the Netflix spokesman, declined to comment on the company's contracts with Amazon.

Best SEO tips: Six-Star Cruising on Luxury Cruise Lines - kyiruf's

There are six cruise lines that are in the luxury class: Crystal Cruise Line, Cunard Cruise Line, Radisson Seven Seas, The Yachts of Seabourn, Silversea Cruise Line, and Windstar Cruises.

Crystal Cruise Line has received numerous awards for excellence. For the last nine years, Conde Nast Traveler has named Crystal "Best Large-Ship Cruise Line". Also for the last nine years, Travel + Leisure magazine has given Crystal the status of "World's Best Large-Ship Cruise Line". And for service, a Travel + Leisure reader's poll voted Crystal "World's Best". Crystal Cruise Line operates only three ships: Crystal Harmony, Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. These ships carry approximately 1,000 passengers each and Crystal Cruise Line boasts the greatest passenger space per guest of any cruise line.

Do you recognize the ship names Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth? These great ships come from Cunard, a name long synonymous with luxury and elegance in cruises. "With Cunard, the journey may be even more magnificent than the destination" states their promotional literature. Cunard operates just two award-winning luxury ships. The Queen Mary 2, launched in January, 2004, is known as the longest, tallest and largest ocean liner and carries 2,620 passengers. It is replacing the Queen Elizabeth 2 for transatlantic crossings but the QE2 will still be available for cruises.

Radisson Seven Seas is a small luxury cruise line. Small here means that the ships carry a small number of passengers. Fewer than 700 fortunate passengers per cruise are pampered by attentive staff. Radisson Seven Seas has been named by Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines to be the "World's Best Small Cruise Line". Radisson Seven Seas appeals to the sophisticated traveler.

The Yachts of Seabourn cruise line advertises that they provide "Ultra Luxury" by "delivering the highest levels of personalized service to an exclusive group of guests aboard intimate, elegant ships that could visit the most enticing destinations worldwide." Seabourn sails three identical all-suite ships that cater to only 208 passengers each. Of course, dining and service is world-class.

Silversea Cruises is a new company, founded in 1994, for the express purpose of providing an ultra-luxury cruise experience aboard small and intimate ships with all the features of a large cruise vessel. The Silverseas ships Cloud, Wind, Shadow, and Whisper provide all-suite accommodations that between 250 square feet and over 1,300 square feet in size. Silversea vies with Radisson Seven Seas and Crystal Cruise Lines for the accolades of Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure in the world's best categories. Silversea Cruises has also has been named by Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines to be the "World's Best Small Cruise Line" many times since its inception.

Windstar Cruises offers a totally different sailing experience. Windstar Cruises offers motor-sail-yachts instead of cruise ships. Yes, their ships actually have sails that are computer-controlled with the latest in technology. Windstar's four ships carry just 148 to 308 passengers in staterooms or luxurious suites, giving the feel of being aboard a personal yacht. Even with such a small fleet, Windstar Cruises sail to over 47 countries around the world.

If you're in the market for a luxury cruise, there are a number of excellent cruise lines to chose from.

Study suggests gaming doesn't have to affect relationships

Computer funNot all video game players are destined for lives filled with failing relationships and dwindling friendships, according to Penn State researchers, who say that a lot depends on the role of the game-playing activity in the gamer?s life.

?There?s a common stereotype that if you play video games, then you are a loner,? said Benjamin Hickerson, assistant professor of recreation, parks and tourism management. ?But it may have more to do with how a person is involved in gaming that determines how their social support is affected.?

In a study of people who played multi-player, first-person shooter games, like the Call of Duty and Halo, gamers who organized their lives around gaming activities tended to experience a negative effect on their friendships and relationships. On the other hand, the researchers, who published their findings in the current issue of Society and Leisure, found that gamers who primarily played the game as a way to reinforce social bonds said they experienced higher levels of social ties and support.

Hickerson said that behavioral indicators, such as the amount of time and money spent on games, were not related to the gamers? success in maintaining their social ties.

?What the study does seem to point out is that video gaming is not always a negative,? Hickerson said. ?Players may actually be doing something positive when gaming becomes a way for games to connect with friends who they otherwise may not be able to spend time with, especially friends who they are not near geographically.?

Multi-player, first-person shooter games allow video game players to compete online by themselves against other players around the world, or they can team with other players in a variety of combat scenarios.

Hickerson, who worked with Andrew Mowen, associate professor of recreation, parks and tourism management, said that people derive meaning from leisure activities in a variety of ways, including using them to help establish and maintain friendships ? social bonding ? and a need to organize their lives around the activities ? centrality.

The researchers, who relied on a scale that experts use to assess a person?s involvement in leisure activities, said that the other factors of the scale, such as, deriving pleasure and self-identity from video-gaming, did not significantly affect social ties.

To collect data for the study, the researchers surveyed the gamers who were waiting in line for a late night release of a new version of the video game, Call of Duty: Black Ops, at two central Pennsylvania video game stores. Hickerson said that gamers who attend these new release gatherings tend to be both behaviorally and psychologically committed to the activity.

The researchers asked 175 video game customers to fill out a questionnaire about their video game playing habits and attitudes. Hickerson said 166 completed and returned the questionnaire.

To assess whether or not video game playing served a central role in the life of the gamer, the participants were asked to assess the truth of statements, such as, ?I find that a lot of my life is organized around video gaming? and ?I invest most of my energy and resources in video gaming.?

The researchers also measured what role social bonding played in their gaming by asking them to what extent they agreed with statements such as, ?Most of my friends are in some way associated with video gaming? and ?I enjoy discussing video gaming with my friends.?

To measure the behavioral investment, the researchers asked the participants to estimate how much time and money they spend on video game playing. On average, the respondents spent 20.5 hours per week playing video games and a majority spent more than $200 a year on video games.

However, some gamers who participated in the study were deeply invested in the game, both financially and behaviorally, Hickerson said.

?Some participants indicated they spent more than 100 hours per week on playing games, which is well above the national average,? said Hickerson.

?These are people who are thoroughly invested in gaming and people who are organizing their lives around playing video games.? Hickerson said that this information could help video game designers create games that identify problematic behaviors, such as excessive centrality, and build games with features that help the gamers maintain friendships and relationships.

Bengals clinch playoff spot, edge Steelers 13-10

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? A.J. Green doesn't really care about the Cincinnati Bengals' woeful past. The wide receiver wasn't part of it and hasn't really taken the time to study it.

The Bengals were bad. End of story.

And now they're good. Beginning of story.

Andy Dalton hit Green for a 21-yard pass in the final minutes to set up Josh Brown's 43-yard field goal with 4 seconds left to lift the Bengals to a 13-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Cincinnati (9-6) clinched a second straight playoff berth after beating the Steelers (7-8) for the first time since 2009. Pittsburgh (7-8) was eliminated from postseason contention.

The only other time the Bengals made the playoffs in consecutive seasons came in 1981-82, six years before Green was born.

"This has been our goal coming in at the beginning of the season," Green said. "A lot of people talked about we hadn't been in in back to back seasons in 30 years. I don't worry about that stuff. I've been here two years and we made the playoffs all two years. That's all we can control."

Shredding the label as erratic ? and sometimes comical ? losers one improbable victory at a time, the Bengals, their precocious duo of Green and Dalton and their quickly improving defense have Cincinnati in uncharted territory.

The Bengals have been around since 1968. This is the first time they'll make the postseason in two straight non-strike years.

"I know they just think that there's some complex; there's no complex, you've just got to come play and win," coach Marvin Lewis said. "This group in there has very little history of anything."

Maybe that's why Bengals aren't doomed to repeat it.

Brown missed a 56-yarder earlier in the fourth quarter, but earned a second chance when Reggie Nelson picked off Ben Roethlisberger and returned it to the Pittsburgh 46 with 14 seconds remaining. Dalton found Green down the right sideline on the next play, setting up Brown's winner.

"I've had some pretty big kicks, but that was a long time ago," said Brown, who is filling in for injured starter Mike Nugent. "When you have a chance for the playoffs there's nothing bigger. It's a big deal.

Dalton completed 24 of 41 for 278 yards and two interceptions for the Bengals, which snapped a five-game losing streak to Pittsburgh. Green caught 10 passes for 116 yards and Cincinnati's defense next let the Steelers get comfortable.

Roethlisberger completed 14 of 28 passes for 220 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Leon Hall returned the first pick 17 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and Nelson stepped in front of an overthrown Roethlisberger pass in the fourth.

The Steelers needed to win their final two games to make the playoffs. Instead, the team that was 6-3 in early November will spend January at home after falling for the fifth time in its last six games.

"''We should be (in the playoffs) if it wasn't for me," Roethlisberger said after throwing his second game-deciding interception in eight days.

Roethlisberger tossed a pick ? also intended for Wallace ? on the second play of overtime in Dallas last Sunday, allowing the Cowboys to win it on a field goal. He openly questioned offensive coordinator Todd Haley's play calling after the loss, but apologized later and insisted he and Haley were "on the same page."

Maybe, but the Steelers hardly played like it. The Bengals sacked Roethlisberger four times and allowed Pittsburgh to complete just 2 of 14 third downs.

"Not our day and thus, not our year," Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said. "Just not enough significant plays at the moments. Sounds like a broken record but reality as we sit here."

Pittsburgh did a decent job of keeping Dalton and Green in check, posting season highs with three turnovers and six sacks. The Bengals couldn't run the ball at all, managing just 14 yards against the NFL's top defense. Still, it wasn't enough for the Steelers, turning a season that looked so promising before Election Day into a muddled mess.

Instead of making playoff plans, Pittsburgh needs a victory next week against Cleveland to avoid the first losing season in Tomlin's six-year tenure.

Normally it's the Bengals who are playing out the string. Yet the franchise that served as a punchline for so long is now the one throwing the punches. Cincinnati never trailed in a place it rarely wins and allowed the Steelers to make the critical mistakes.

Well, most of them anyway.

Cincinnati drove into Pittsburgh territory midway through the fourth quarter with the score tied at 10 before things bogged down at the Steelers 38. Rather than try to pin reeling Pittsburgh deep, Lewis sent out Brown to attempt a 56-yard field goal into the tricky Heinz Field winds.

The kick was never close, giving the Steelers premium field position with 3:18 left.

"I make decisions to try to win the game today and they kind of backfired on me a little bit," Lewis said.

Pittsburgh, however, had its own kicking issues. The Steelers moved to the Cincinnati 36, then brought out Shaun Suisham for a 53-yard attempt that was short all the way.

The Bengals went nowhere, giving Pittsburgh one last shot in regulation. Rather than run out the clock and play for overtime with the ball at their own 11 and 44 seconds to go, the Steelers tried to make something happen.

And they did. For the Bengals. Facing second down at the Pittsburgh 29, Roethlisberger rolled to his right and tried to hit Wallace down the sideline. The ball sailed over Wallace's head and into Nelson's arms.

Two plays later Cincinnati was celebrating a playoff berth that signaled another step out of its mediocre past.

NOTES: Cincinnati's 14 yards rushing were the second-fewest in franchise history. The Bengals had 4 yards rushing against Baltimore in 2000 ... Pittsburgh TE Heath Miller left game in the fourth quarter with a right knee injury ... Brown is 8 of 9 since taking over for Nugent three weeks ago ... Five of Pittsburgh's eight losses this season have come by three points ... Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall had 50 yards rushing in his return after serving a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

Humane Society Official Warns Against Giving Pets As Gifts ? CBS ...

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) ? If you are looking for that perfect last minute gift, you may be considering a pet.

The Missouri Humane Society?s Debbie Hill says the holidays can be the perfect time of year because people have extra time off and vacation. But she cautions to do your homework first.

?Research about what type of pet is right for you, your family, and your lifestyle,? she advised. ?Do you have a lot of kids and a lot of noise; is it quiet; do you want a pet to go jogging with you when the weather is good? Really consider what your needs are.?

Hill adds it is best not to surprise someone with an animal on Christmas morning because it can be a chaotic time. Instead you may want to purchase a gift certificate.

?That way, the whole family can visit the Humane Society together after the holidays to select their new pet and we have adoption counselors who would be happy to find them just the right pet,? she said.

Newtown says goodbye to loved ones lost in school shooting ...

Tributre left for elementary school victims

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (CNN) ? Grace McDonnell would write messages for her mother in the bathroom window.

On the first day without Grace, the bathroom fogged up and mom glanced at the window. And right there was a message from beyond the grave.

The little girl had drawn the peace sign, her favorite symbol. Above it was a heart with the words: ?Grace, Mom.?

?She was all about peace and gentleness and kindness,? said Lynn McDonnell.

Amazing, Grace. A girl who lived by the family?s mottos: ?Live for the moment? and ?Soak it in.?

The McDonnells are now part of a community bound together by the tragedy of what transpired at a Connecticut elementary school, joined by a nation that has grieved with them.

Yet amid the memories of that awful day in Newtown, signs of hope have emerged.

Gene Rosen won?t forget his connection. It?s touched his soul and made him believe more in God and angels again.

Rosen went out back to feed two of his cats shortly after 9:15 a.m. on December 14. His home sits on an acre of land on Riverside Road, with his backyard on a hill overlooking Sandy Hook Elementary.

That day, he heard staccato gunfire ? Boom! Boom! Boom! ? coming from the vicinity of the school. The retired psychologist convinced himself it was fireworks.

Andrei Nikitchyuk was working in his home office that morning. He received a robocall from the school that it was in lockdown. He didn?t think much of it ? the school recently had two lockdowns for false alarms: a suspicious car and bank robbery.

Inside the school, his son, Bear, walked down the hall with a friend toward the main office. Gunshots whizzed by.

Teacher Janet Vollmer huddled with her children away from doors and windows. Someone turned on the intercom system. The sound of gunfire and a woman crying was piped into every classroom.

Vollmer told her kids she loved them and began reading out loud.

It shattered a town and brought a president to tears. Twenty children ? all aged 6 and 7 ? were gunned down in the safest place they had ever known, their home away from home. Six educators died, too, hailed as heroes.

Never had an act of violence seemed so heinous, so horrifying in America. An attack on pure innocence at a school that symbolized peace and love.

Since then, residents of Newtown have been dealing with the arc of life in unimaginable ways ? of death and loss, of pain and suffering, of shock and horror, of beginning to heal.

Couples who settled here years ago had grown close to one another through their children and their schools. Teens in middle school had babysat the first-graders slain at Sandy Hook. Some teens had played on sports teams with siblings of the slain children; others attended dance class with sisters of girls killed at the school. College students, home for the holiday, saw the school they loved desecrated.

?I can?t even tell you how hard it is for these kids,? said Lillian Bittman, former chairwoman of the Newtown Board of Education. ?A lot of these kids have been here their whole lives. That?s why these connections are so strong.

?They?ve lost their childhood.?

Newtown?s Pastor Rocky Veach had been a preacher in Littleton, Colorado, when the Columbine shooting occurred. He said the biggest lesson he learned from the 1999 massacre was ?that a lot of things are going to pan out over the next months here, even years, and you will see God?s hand was in this, but you can?t see it now.?

Maybe it?s too soon, too difficult to imagine another reality further in the future. Right now, residents can only think of the town they once knew and how everything changed that Friday.

For most, the pain is just too fresh, the attack too senseless to comprehend.

In the wake of the massacre, Americans have begun looking at gun control and mental health issues. It?s also forced our society to take a deep introspective look: Have we become too polarized? What can we learn from those children?

Is there meaning to be drawn from Grace?s message on that window?

Gene Rosen had blocked out the sounds of whatever he heard coming from the school. How obnoxious, he thought, that somebody would shoot off fireworks so early in the day.

?I wanted to think that,? he said, ?because I know the school is over there.?

He fed his two cats in a loft above his garage and walked back toward his home. He spotted something odd toward the end of his driveway.

There were six children ? four girls and two boys ? sitting on his lawn. A woman sat in the middle with them. A tall, skinny man stood over them and spoke in a loud voice: ?IT?S GOING TO BE ALL RIGHT! IT?S GOING TO BE ALL RIGHT!?

Rosen thought they were practicing a school skit. When he got closer, he could see the children were out of breath and crying.

?There?s been an incident at the school,? said the woman, a Sandy Hook bus driver.

Rosen?s not sure how the bus driver ended up with the children on his lawn. Nor does he know the identity of the man, who later walked off.

But Rosen knows this: It was the start of a ?journey into hell.?

He once had worked as a psychologist with the chronically mentally ill at a state psychiatric hospital. But nothing had prepared him for what would transpire next. Instead, at 69, his grandfatherly instincts kicked in.

He invited the children into his home. He ran upstairs and grabbed as many stuffed animals as possible. They calmed the children briefly.

One of the girls stared out his living room window. ?I want my mommy,? she said. ?I want my mommy.?

The two boys sat on the floor, crying uncontrollably and shouting, ?We can?t go back to school! We can?t go back to school! We don?t have a teacher!?

Then they said the name of their 27-year-old teacher, Victoria Soto.

?Mrs. Soto! Mrs. Soto! She?s gone,? they said in unison.

One of the girls said she watched the teacher fall to the ground.

Without prompting, one of the boys added, ?He had a big gun and he had a little gun.?

The other boy said, ?Yeah, yeah, he had a big gun and a little gun.?

Then they both began anew their chilling cry. ?We can?t go back to school. We can?t go back to school ??

Blowing Mom a kiss

Grace McDonnell, 7, enjoyed Sandy Hook Elementary School with its loving teachers and inviting learning environment. Earlier in the week she had a stomachache, and her mother suggested she stay home.

?No way,? the girl said. ?I have too much fun there, and I don?t want to miss anything.?

Eager to learn, Grace would pack her bag the night before school and skip to the bus stop when it was time to leave.

The night before the tragedy, Mom and Dad tucked their only daughter in bed. ?See you in the morning,? Chris McDonnell told her. ?Don?t let the bed bugs bite.?

Mom often joked that her daughter was so full of life ?she would talk from the minute she woke up until the minute she went to bed. We were always, ?It?s time for bed, Grace. It?s time for bed, Grace.??

That Friday morning was like any other school day, a whirlwind of activity before heading out the door. She skipped down the road and boarded the school bus.

Grace blew her mother a kiss, as she always did. An endearing final image.

?Luckiest guy in the room?

Bear was one of two third-graders chosen by their teacher for the important job of class helper. The pair headed out of the room that morning to deliver an attendance report to the office.

As they neared the office, gunshots rang out. Bear said he could see bullets flying by. Smoke filled the air.

The two children froze, like deer in headlights. A second-grade teacher saw the children were in harm?s way, raced toward them and grabbed them. She pulled them into a bathroom with other children and barricaded the door.

?If she didn?t do that, I don?t know,? said Bear?s father, Andrei Nikitchyuk.

Nikitchyuk and his wife were filled with anxiety when they realized the robocall was real. Rumors were rampant. Parents were panicked. Police were everywhere.

A Ukrainian native, Nikitchyuk came to the United States in 1992 shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. He had always felt safe here and had been fortunate enough to live the American dream.

He settled in Newtown eight years ago. His two oldest children, ages 13 and 14, had attended Sandy Hook.

?It?s just horrific,? Nikitchyuk said. ?I don?t know how our little ones are going to be affected by all this, but our older ones, I think, matured in just a few days.?

The father was spurred to action: ?This horrific event woke me up.? He traveled to the White House to speak up for gun control. He was the Sandy Hook representative for a Newtown United delegation that was joined by families who had lost loved ones to gun violence in the mass shootings in Aurora, Colorado, Columbine and Virginia Tech, as well as random shootings in Chicago.

?I was the luckiest guy in the room because my kid survived and theirs didn?t.?

The group met with Valerie Jarrett, senior adviser to President Obama.

Nikitchyuk?s message: ?This is unacceptable in our society. We have to do better.?

Emergency plans and instinct

Kindergarten teacher Janet Vollmer heard what she believed were gunshots. Then, the intercom system piped in the sounds of gunfire into her room. The teachers were well-schooled on drills; their principal made sure of that.

Vollmer immediately began putting her emergency planning to use. She knew the drill was to get kids outside and to the nearby firehouse. But it seemed too dangerous. She had 19 children she needed to protect.

?There was no announcement of what was going on,? she said. ?My instinct was it wasn?t good.?

The teacher of 18 years gathered her kindergartners in a cubby area away from the door. Teaching assistants closed the blinds.

?We read a story and we kept them calm,? she said. ?We do this as teachers. We are trained. We have drills. We talk to the kids and in case something were to happen, this is what we do.?

After about 30 minutes, she said, police knocked on the door. The children were told to close their eyes and walk in a line outside. She told the kids to look straight at the walls and nothing else until they got outside. They headed to the Sandy Hook firehouse, the school?s emergency gathering point.

It would be hours before she learned the awful magnitude. She had taught 10 of the slain children just last year.

?The gift of these children?

Gene Rosen?s home sits right next to the firehouse. Inside his house, the kids continued to wail.

?We can?t go back to school!?

At one point, one of the boys broke through his tears with a note of levity. He sat up, held his finger in the air and said, ?Just saying, your house is very small.?

?In that moment, he brought into the home peace and light,? Rosen recalled. ?I felt like an angel descended upon us and this boy, and we laughed.?

?God sent a respite from hell ? just a moment of recess.? He paused, then added: ?They saw their teacher assassinated.?

He and the school bus driver tried to call the children?s parents, but they got answering machines. They notified the driver?s supervisor who relayed the information to authorities. Some of the parents soon arrived. The parents, Rosen and the six kids walked to the neighboring firehouse.

The children and their teachers huddled in bay areas where firetrucks are typically kept so they could be counted.

Two hours later, after Rosen had returned home, a woman knocked on his door. She said she was the mother of 6-year-old Jesse Lewis.

?Her face looked frozen in fear. She said to me, ?I heard there were six kids here. Is he here???

Rosen knew the names of the six children who he helped. His heart sank. ?No, he?s not here,? Rosen told her.

As he recalled that encounter, Rosen wept. ?She was just looking for a miracle, and I wanted to deliver her son to her ? and I couldn?t.?

Initial reports had indicated two adults were dead, but by late Friday afternoon parents of the slain children were told of their loss at a private room in the firehouse.

Back at the firehouse, Rosen looked at a list posted later and wept again when he saw two of the names: Victoria Soto and Jesse Lewis.

Before the tragedy, Rosen often read children?s books to an elementary school in a neighboring town.

He?d recently come across a kid?s book about a girl whose dog died in a fire. For weeks afterward, the girl smelled soot in her dreams and couldn?t sleep. Then, one night a one-eyed cat jumped into her bed, cuddled with her and purred. The cat?s soothing purr helped her sleep for the first time.

?The book doesn?t end with a rainbow,? he said. ?It ends with hope in the sense of the continuity of her healing.?

He couldn?t help but wonder: What will be Newtown?s one-eyed cat?

?The one-eyed cat is here,? he said. ?I don?t know what it is yet.?

The son of Orthodox Jews from Ukraine, Rosen hasn?t been to synagogue in more than 40 years. But he said God delivered six angels to him that day. ?This experience has made me spiritual,? he said. ?I want to show those children that there is light.

?Let the goodness of the children, their essential innocence and goodness and energy ? let them provide us with a pathway,? he said. ?That?s what I want the gift of these children to be.?

?So many angels?

The McDonnells were overcome when they first saw Grace?s white casket at the funeral home. ?You felt like the floor was falling out beneath you and your breath was taken away,? her mother said.

But then, they pulled out Sharpies of all colors and began drawing: peace signs, ice cream cones, lighthouses, sea gulls. The family said it looked like it was covered in graffiti by the time they were done.

?We had to take great joy in knowing that when we walked in there it was so white, and our breath was taken away,? Lynn McDonnell said. ?But when we walked out of there, it was like we had joy again. It had so much color.?

The family also brought Grace?s favorite pocketbook, seashells, hair bows and flip-flops, as well as her sunglasses and a frying pan. Her father placed his New York Yankees cap with her. Grace loved Taylor Swift and Kenny Chesney ? the family gave her music from both.

?When we left, we were like: She?s fully stocked,? her mom recalled.

Her father said that ?thinking of her smile, her spark, her brightness? helped guide the family through this most difficult time. Telling Grace?s 12-year-old brother Jack what had happened, he said, was the ?toughest thing to do.?

The McDonnells, like the other grieving families, met privately with President Obama when he visited Newtown last Sunday. Lynn McDonnell said his visit brought reassurance. ?He?s just a dad coming in to meet a dad and a mom and a son ? and we really felt that.?

Grace was a budding artist. The family gave the president a painting of an owl she had drawn. He told the family he would treasure it.

The parents say they?re comforted by the fact Grace died with her friends. ?She was at a place that she loved,? her mother said.

?We have so many angels and so many bright stars shining over all of us in this town right now,? the father said. ?They will teach us how to go on and how to live through them.?

They have no hatred toward the shooter, a point they?ve emphasized to their surviving son.

?The thing that Grace taught us is that you?ve got to live for the future,? her father said. ?You?ve got to live for happiness, peace, and to not divert your energies to hate, anger. That wasn?t her. It?s not us.?

That, they say, is their daughter?s lasting legacy.
