SALEM, VA ? Keegan Bragg, a junior offensive guard for St. Thomas, was this year's recipient of the NCAA Division III Elite 89 award Thursday night for his academic achievements.

The award is presented to the student-athlete participating at a finals site for an NCAA championship with the highest cumulative grade-point average.

Bragg, a mechanical engineering major, has a 3.982 gpa -? straight A?s except for an A-minus in Introduction to Theology the fall semester of his freshman year.

?I wanted to play DIII football, and St. Thomas was the only school in the area with a mechanical engineering degree,? Bragg said. ?It has been a great experience for me on the field and in the classroom.?

Bragg is a 2010 graduate of Eagan High School, where he was an honors student, Most Valuable Lineman in football and captain of the track and field team. He played defensive line as a freshman and sophomore at St. Thomas but was moved to offense this year and started three games at guard.

He is the third St. Thomas athlete to receive an Elite 89 award this calendar year. Kia Johnson, a member of the Tommies? national championship volleyball team, won the award last month (and also in 2010). Michael Mortenson, a golfer, won last spring.
